Trip Preparation

In order to prepare for the field research portion of the trip, Dr. Jeannine Lessmann and Zoë Shribman spent a day with the team in May 2016 to go over mangrove botany and data collection/analysis information.

 

In addition, Dr. Jeannine Lessmann and the students traveled to Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve in Hillsborough County, Florida. The team kayaked through the bay and practiced setting up transect lines, identifying mangrove species and measuring mangrove saplings and trees in one of the mangrove forests.  

Research Preparation 
Language Introduction

Professor Lessmann taught a semester-long course introductory course of the Indonesian language for the AEI Indonesia students in Spring 2016. 

 

The students met with Professor Lessmann weekly to lead language and cultural discussions as well as practice vocabulary and grammar. Students also utilized the online course material from University of Hawai'i's "The Indonesian Way"

 

Students were tested on their speaking, listening and writing abilities of the indoensian language throughout the semester.
